With the third overall pick in the first year player draft the Royals selcted the High School 1st baseman Eric Hosmer. Hosmer is not really a 5-tool prospect, but looks like he has good power potential. Keith Law says on ESPN.com that he has the most raw power of any of the first round players.
Going into the draft I really wanted the Royals to go with a college player like Justin Smoak or Buster Posey, but i’m actually starting to like this pick now. It’s pretty obvious that the Royals need to add more power and if Hosmer has the most power than I like this pick. I wanted a college player because he would be able to play in the majors sooner and be abit more of a sure thong. In recent draft history the HS 1st basemen that have been taken in the first round have been pretty successful. Just to name a few there has been Prince Fielder, Adrian Gonzalez, and James Looney.
Kansas City also added some depth to the farm system’s pitching with this draft. In the supplemental round the Royals added LHP Mike Montgomery. He is 6′4, 180 pounds and throws a low 90’s fastball, a curve, and a changeup. The Royals also picked up Tim Melville, also a lefty who dropped because of how much money he wanted. I really like the Melville pick but both of these guys are two of the best high school arms in the draft.
I thoght today went pretty good for the Royals and I woulad give them a 8.5/10 rating for the draftt so far.
